Celebrity Sponsored Ads: Kylie Jenner - Surveillance Fashion
Campaign:
Objective: Introducing @metaglasses by @kyliejenner. A new way to see and share your world.
Why it gives ick:
This isn’t normal - nobody asked for a surveillance state, or much less 24/7 spywear. These make women feel unsafe, and having a famous spokeswoman trying to make them look chic isn’t going to work. There are plenty of stories about women being harassed online more and feeling creeped out by who’s behind those glasses and what they're filming about you.
These glasses can see every step you take, every person you talk to and interact with, it gathers and sell your data, plus no one knows if you’re recording them or not. The question is, who’s buying your data, where is it going, who has it, and for how long? Who is profiting from your data? I’ve got nothing but questions and no answers. As a user, you can have the light disabled but still record, a Meta failsafe for users, so no one really knows who’s being recorded.
I almost feel sorry for Mark Zuckerberg, almost. He’s tried so many times with his inventions; remember the MetaVerse, NFT’s, and Second Life-esque online community with PS1 graphics. Now this crap? Pardon me, but if you’re a person of a certain age, the scene from The Jerk will come to mind: ‘The Opti-Grab, ’ anyone?
The lawsuits should be plentiful for violating privacy and many other things. Long term, this is a disaster of monumental proportions. I’ll be watching. No pun intended.
